Moshe Gold

Tour Guide

Moshe was born in the United States and moved with his family to Israel as a one-year-old child. He grew up in a beautiful community (yishuv) in the Negev – Meitar – and today calls Moshav Beit Zayit, just outside of Jerusalem, his home, where he lives with his wife Vered and their twin daughters. His military service as a fighter and commander in the Givati infantry is a part of his life story and his understanding of the society of Israel. Moshe obtained his master’s degree in Contemporary Judaism from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His academic knowledge has always helped him get a deeper and wider understanding of the Jewish congregations around the world today. Twenty-four years ago, Moshe decided to turn his love for teaching into his way of living, and since then he has been working for several organizations as a guide, educator, and speaker, both in Israel and in Poland, with families, adults, and teenage groups. For several years he worked in Ramah World as a guide, educator, and director of the short-term trip department. Moshe’s love for nature, hiking, and photography make the Negev Desert and the north of Israel his favorite areas of guiding. He connects to the country not only through its land but also through its people and encourages his travelers to do the same. Throughout his guiding he stops to talk with passers-by, plays music, sings with the group, and facilitates role-play and group discussions. When not guiding, Moshe enjoys traveling on his own around the world, taking photos, and hiking.

Frequently asked questions

ABOUT PLANNING A COMMUNITY TRIP TO ISRAEL

What should I pack for my trip to Israel?

For a smooth and comfortable trip, we recommend packing versatile layers, comfortable walking shoes, and modest attire for religious sites. Check out our detailed packing list here to ensure you’re fully prepared!

What are the electrical voltage requirements in Israel?

Israel operates on a 220V electrical system with a Type H plug, which has three prongs. Many electronic devices, including laptops and phone chargers, automatically adjust to different voltages, but it is always best to check before use. Since Israeli outlets differ from those in the U.S. and other countries, a plug adapter is necessary. Most hotels have adapters available at the front desk, but it is advisable to bring your own to ensure convenience.

Can I withdraw cash from an ATM in Israel?

ATMs throughout Israel dispense New Israeli Shekels (NIS) and accept most international debit and credit cards. However, it is recommended that you check with your home bank regarding daily withdrawal limits and any fees for foreign transactions. Some banks may also require advance notification of your travel plans to prevent your card from being blocked for overseas use. ATMs are readily available at the airport, in hotels, and in major cities. While credit cards, particularly Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted, cash may still be necessary for small vendors, open-air markets like Machane Yehuda, and taxis.

What is the tipping policy in Israel?

Tipping is customary in Israel, particularly in the service and tourism industries. In restaurants, a 12% tip is standard, while 15–20% is appropriate for excellent service. It is generally preferred that tips be given in cash rather than included on a credit card, as service fees added to card transactions may not always reach the server. Some restaurants automatically include service in the bill, so it is a good idea to check before tipping.

For tour guides and drivers, tipping varies based on group size. For private groups of fewer than 20 people, a recommended tip for a tour guide is $75–$125 per day. For larger groups of 20 or more, it is suggested that each participant contribute $5–$7 per day for the guide and $3–$5 per day for the driver.

How does Israel Maven ensure safety and security during the trip?

The safety of our travelers is our highest priority. We adhere to the latest security directives from the Israeli Police, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and other relevant authorities to ensure that all travel routes and activities comply with updated safety guidelines. Our team continuously monitors real-time updates regarding security conditions, travel advisories, and weather-related considerations. If necessary, adjustments to the itinerary will be made to prioritize the safety and well-being of all participants. In addition, all our guides are professionally trained to handle emergency situations, ensuring a secure and smooth travel experience.

What happens if I need to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances?

While we strive to be as accommodating as possible, Israel Maven is bound by contractual agreements with hotels, guides, and other service providers, meaning that refunds cannot be guaranteed. Participants should review our cancellation policy for specific details regarding refunds and potential penalties. To protect against financial loss due to last-minute cancellations caused by illness, security concerns, or personal emergencies, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance.
